The Mark of Athena Book Review (Phoenix)

Book: The Mark of Athena
Type: ebook
Author: Rick Riordan
Price: $10.00 (for the Kindle form)
Pages: about 608

The Mark Of Athena is one of the Heroes of Olympus series. It’s about demigods who are on a quest to free Nico, son of the god Hades, who is held captive by very dramatic giants. They also must prevent the world from being ruled by Gaea, an evil force of the earth. The demigods are Frank, Hazel, Jason, Piper, Leo, Percy, and Annabeth. Also, to make it more difficult, Annabeth has a quest of her own. She must follow the Mark of Athena and return an artifact to its rightful owner.

This book is full of suspense and keeps your interest. The only weakness is that it doesn’t have a very complicated plot.

I’d rate this book four out of five chocolate bars because it’s very funny and suspenseful, but it doesn’t have a very complicated plot. I think that this book is well worth reading.

This book is appropriate for ages ten and up.

Cover Thoughts: I think it's cool that they put an owl behind the lightning and Jason and Percy fighting. It's eye-catching and cool.

Percy Jackson The Lightning Thief, a review by Kyle

Title:  Percy Jackson: The Lightning Thief
Author:  Rick Riordan
Format:  Paperback
Price: I borrowed it from the library

Summary:The storyline of this book is centered on a 12 year-old boy named Percy Jackson. Just after the end of 6th grade Percy Jackson finds out that there is something different about him than other kids this age. He is then taken to a camp by his best friend Grover that is safe for other kids like him to train and practice fighting monsters after a nightmarish journey with his mother driving him and Grover and a Minotaur snatching his mother away from them just as they reach camp. At camp, Percy learns more about himself and his godly parent, The God of the Sea -- Poseidon -- and one of the Big 3 brothers which include Poseidon, Zeus, and Hades. When Zeus discovers his master bolt is missing (his weapon that allows him to create and shoot lightning at will), Zeus then blames Poseidon for this theft and declares war on him unless the bolt is returned by the Summer Solstice. Percy is sent on a quest to retrieve the masterbolt which is believed to be in Hades' possession in the underworld and return it to Olympus, helped by Grover and a smart daughter of Athena named Annabeth who will also become his other close friend. Does he succeed? Read and find out!

Characters:  Perseus Jackson: The protagonist of the story. Percy seems to be a good-natured, friendly, brave, and willing to risk his life to save friends. Percy is on a quest to retrieve a very powerful godly weapon and save his mother from the underworld. Throughout the story his motivations never seem to waver from saving his mother from the clutches of Hades.

Annabeth: A blonde-haired, smart daughter of Athena who becomes close friends with Percy Jackson. In the beginning of the story Annabeth just wanted to go on the quest with Percy just to get out of camp and find out if she was “any good” in the real world. However in the duration of the book she comes to genuinely like Percy a lot and they become very good friends.

Grover: Of the trio that goes on the quest to retrieve the masterbolt Grover is the only non-human. He is a Satyr who is best friends with Percy and Annabeth. He also plays the reed pipes (rather badly). In the beginning of the book Grover does not seem to be too intense on going on the quest to be a big hero, he just goes along because he feels that it is his duty as Percy’s assigned Protector and one of his best friends. Then, on the quest Percy relies on him quite a bit for all their safety and Grover steps up to the plate ready. His motivations never change from wanting to help Percy and protect him.

The main important ideas in this book drive home the idea/feeling that no matter how bad or depressing a situation may be if you want it badly enough and you trust your friends then it will turn out all right in the end. Percy learns that in the story and matures a lot by the end of the book.

He also becomes more aware of how quickly life can go so that is a sobering thought but Rick Riordan also makes the book humorous and a extremely enjoyable read. At the end of the book Percy trusts his mother enough to make the decision herself that will affect her and Percy’s life.

Percy becomes a much more flexible person personality-wise also. Even though it goes against his very nature to obey oppressive orders, Percy consents to listens to his elders.

Some of my favorite parts of the book are the humorous parts. Rick Riordan wrote an awesome adventure/quest book that had awesome, amazing characters that made it seem like you were there with them due to the fact that it is written from Percy’s POV. He goes into depth with their emotions and dialogue. The storyline is also perfect. It has a lot going on in it and Rick Riordan spaces it pretty nicely so that the book is not a read like a Harry Potter book but yet it is thrilling.

The ending was good for me because at the time that Rick Riordan just wrote it, I don’t think he fully knew that he would be writing a full 5 book series so it was okay if he fast-forwarded a little bit.  I am looking forward to reading the other 4 books in this series by him; I hear from friends that it is an excellent series. For a book about Greek mythology it is amazing that he found a way to make a series about Greek myths. It’s like a story about old myths told by Greeks within a modern storyline.

Rating: I would definitely give it 5 out of 5 chocolate bars in rating.
Cover Thoughts:  Between the 2 book’s covers I definitely prefer the original over the cover that has a picture of the movie on it because it shows what the author envisioned Percy Jackson looking like not some actor being paid a bunch of money to act in a movie that destroyed the book’s good rep.
Appropriateness:  The book’s appropriateness is good for kids that are just starting to read chapter books and for older kids as well because it has the right kind of humor for all ages: It’s not perverted humor but it's not stupid 1st grade potty jokes either.

Percy Jackson: a review by Daniel.e/gamechanger

Danny.E Gamechanger946

Title: Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief
Author: Rick Riordan
Format: paperback
pages: 375
price: $9.00

Percy Jackson the Lightning Thief is a good book in many ways. First the book is very breath-taking and has lots of action. It also is kind of sad in some parts. In the beginning of the book a boy named Percy Jackson gets kicked out of a school called Yancy Academy. Then he finds out that his best friend is half goat. Grover, the best friend, is Percy's protector. My favorite part in the book was when Percy and Grover were driving to the camp that his dad wanted him to go to. They were getting chased by a huge demon thing, and they crashed, and the demon thing charged at them.  The demon thing got his horn stuck in a tree, and Percy took it out.  Then he stabbed the demon thing in the chest.  My favorite character is Grover because he is heroic for the way he protected Percy throughout the whole book and wouldn't leave his side.

I recommend this book for people who like action.  They would like it because there's lots of action parts in the book, and it will excite the reader because they never know what happens next.

4 out of 5 chocolate bars
Appropriateness:  Some violence, but not too bad.
Cover Thoughts:  I thought that the cover of the book was very detailed and was well illustrated.

Son of Neptune by Rick Riordan

You can tell that the In the Middle (of a Good Book) staff has a lot of tastes in common, because we've had a Hiaasen theme, and now we're in a Riordan streak!  Everyone's been crazy to read the book Son of Neptune, so this is our second review of it by thierryhenry14!

TITLE: Son of Neptune

AUTHOR: Rick Riordan

FORMAT: ebook

PRICE: Discounted to $9.99

Son of Neptune is...aaaammmmmmmmaaaaaazzzzzzzzzzzzzziiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiinnnnnnnnnnnngggggggggggg!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This second book of Heroes of Olympus series is a perfect sequel to the first book The Lost Hero. The second book is from a Greek demigod's (Percy Jackson) point of view, whereas in the first book it was from Jason's (a Roman demigod) point of view. Percy's memory was stolen by Juno (Hera), so Percy has to find the Roman demigods' camp, Camp Jupiter, without his memory. At camp, Percy meets Hazel and Frank (who both have a curse set on them). They help him along the way on his quest to Alaska, also known as the land beyond the gods, to release Pluto's (Hades) lieutenant Thanatos from his captive, the giant Alcyoneus (who is unbeatable in the place he was born, a.k.a. Alaska), son of the earth goddess Gaea.

Son of Neptune is totally the action-packed, exciting, suspenseful book I was looking forward to when I bought it. The book goes above and beyond expectations -- I mean this book is seriously amazing. I have read the Percy Jackson and the Last Olympians series, and the gods in those books are in their Greek form, so personally I liked seeing the change in the gods' characters and personalities, and of course I enjoyed reading the new characters.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoyed any of the Percy Jackson books by Rick Riordan. It's seriously good.

I give this book 4 1/2 chocolate bars because it is really good. I am being more serious than I ever have in my entire life; I do not joke about chocolate.

Son of Neptune By: Rick Riordan

A book review by cutiegreek333

Book Title:  Son of Neptune
Author:  Rick Riordan
Format:  Hardback
Length:  544 pages
Price:  List price $19.99, but I got for forty percent off and on sale!

OMG!!!! You haven't lived until you've read this book!!!!!!!!! It is a perfect blend between the original Percy Jackson books and the new Heroes of Olympus series. This book is about Percy Jackson being sent to Camp Jupiter by Lupa the Wolf without retaining any of his memories...... except a little bit of Annabeth of course ;)........Camp Jupiter is the Roman demigod camp. At Camp Jupiter, Percy meets Hazel and Frank who both bear curses. Hazel's curse is due to the fact that she is the daughter of Pluto/Hades....I won't tell you what it is, though. Frank's curse is more like a death sentence ... his life depends on a half-burned piece of wood. This story is about their adventure to unleash Death A.K.A Thantoes from his prison which is gaurded by Gaea's eldest son, a giant, Alcyoneus......... in Alaska, which is out of the gods' sphere of power. So during their quest they have no chance of godly help, they are on their own.
I recommend this book to anyone who loved the first PJ series, who love Greek/Roman mythology, and Rick Riordan books!!!

I rate this book 4 1/2 chocolate bars
Appropriateness:  Vampire, for mild violence
Cover Thoughts:  It seems really dramatic, but yet it represents the book well even though it's not a scene in the book.
BTW!!!!!!!!!! Keep an eye out for the next Heroes of Olympus book Mark of Athena!!
C ya!

Percy Jackson: The Lightning Thief, Book One, by Rick Riordan

This is a review on...a squirrel!  I do this a lot, sorry, but I just lost my train of thought.  Where was I?

Oh, well, this is a story of an adventure and also love. This is the first book in The Olympians series, by Rick Riordan.  I've read all five of the books in the series, but to tell you the truth, I didn't have a choice to read the first book.  It was completely by accident--I got it as a gift at the end of my summer camp session.  I was sucked in, and anyway I was bored because we were in the middle of a storm.  Well, actually it was more like a tornado.  So.  This book was fantastic, but in the beginning it really didn't tie down because he said he was seeing things, like a teacher disappearing.

I liked it because we find out who Percy's father is, and there was a lot of water mentioned in the book.  I like water.  When I was in second grade, my teacher, Ms. K, told us a lot about Greek myths, so I was stuck on Greek myths--any kind of mythology--and this book was amazing because it mentioned a lot of monsters I never knew of, so I could learn more about their legends.

Some things I thought were interesting about Percy Jackson:
  • He has ADHD
  • He is a demigod
  • We find who he is
  • He is dyslexic
  • This is a good book
  • He is guy from a prophecy
  • He is the son of a mortal
  • His dad is a god
  • He has a Camp Half-Blood Cabin In Montak
  • He is elevn
My rating on Percy Jackson: The Lightning Thief (Book One) is 4 1/2 out of 5 chocolate bars.
There is a little bit of mild violence, but it's okay for children.  I read it when I was nine.

Red pyramid

I read The Red Pyramid by Rick Riordan. It is a very good book, and I would recommend it to anyone who likes action, adventure, and a pinch of sibling humor. The two siblings,Carter and Sadie, are very different. Sadie was raised in England and has an English accent. She also has a cat named Muffin and lives with her and Carter's grandparents.

Carter, on the other hand, has traveled the world with their Dad, an Egyptian mythology professor, and has never actually gone to school.  He has been home schooled from his dad, who only taught him the things he thought were important. Carter and Sadie both lived normal lives until one night every thing changed...........

I rate this book 4 and a half chocolate bars

Favorite Books?

Hey! Stev is posting with a question about books! I was just wondering what books are the current fave! My personal faves are Percy Jackson and The Olympians (all of them, by Rick Riordan) and Ranger's Apprentice (again, all of them)

Ranger's Apprentice (by John Flanagan) is about a fifteen-year-old boy named Will who lives in the castle ward with the other orphans of Redmont Fief. On Choosing Day, none of the Craftmasters want to choose him...except one. The mysterious Ranger Halt gives a note about Will to Baron Arald. Any more info would be spoilery!! You'll have to read it to find out more! HAHAHA!

Comment, please, readers who read, and tell me all about your favorite book(s). ;)
